Tour de Suisse LIVE - Stage 5

2009 Tour de Suisse:  Tom Danielson (Garmin-Slipstream) climbs the Passo del San Gottardo
with the peloton during yesterday's Stage 4.  Danielson is currently in 39th place overall at 01:11

"American Flyers": Drawings by Steve Dennis

- Artist and cycling fan Steve Dennis of Chicago turned to the Kevin Costner film, "American Flyers", for inspiration for his latest cycling drawings.  "It's a cycling movie with some great scenery and some great riding footage, including stock footage of the actual 'Hell of the West'."  The above drawing is already sold but you can check out more of Steve's excellent work at his Velopaint blog.  Thanks, Steve!

2003 Dauphine Libere:  Panoramic view from near the top of the Col du Galibier (or Galibier Pass).
The stage today travels from Briancon up the less difficult side of the Galibier (behind camera) through the tunnel and then down the side of the mountain seen in above photo toward the Col du Telegraphe.  I created the image above from 2 separate photos (see illustration below) by stitching them together digitally.  In this instance I hadn't planned to do this ahead of time but realized afterwards that I could get a much wider view than any one photo could provide.  The extra high resolution results in some nice prints!  -Pete

Galibier Pass: Two separate photos combined to create one panoramic image.
180 or 360 degree panoramas require many more photos.  I have produced such
panoramas from the four corners of France, including at bike races and on some
of the great mountains of the Tour de France.

- Saturday's Dauphine Libere Stage 7 departs Briançon at 12:30 CET (6:30am U.S. Eastern) and is expected in Saint-François Longchamp between 16:53 and 17:30 CET (10:53am and 11:30am U.S. Eastern).  Dauphiné Libéré live video streaming on Cycling TV is scheduled to begin at 15:15 CET (9:15am U.S. Eastern).  Dauphine Libere live coverage on Eurosport is unsure/doubtful at this time with time slots currently filled with Le Mans racing and ATP tennis.  We will list other sources of Dauphine live feeds as they become available.

- Dauphine also LIVE via Eurosport.

- Dauphine LIVE on ETB 1.

- Dauphine Libere LIVE now on Cycling TV.  Link at right.

- French sports daily L'Equipe, the newspaper, often makes for good fish wrap but the publishing group turns out excellent large format book volumes on cycling and the latest is about Le Mont Ventoux: "Tour de France: Le Ventoux, sommet de la folie" ("summit madness").  111 pages, the book draws from L'Equipe's archives of articles about Mont Ventoux and is illustrated with the work of L'Equipe's superb photographers. Time permitting, I'll take a closer look at this book here before the Tour de France stage to Ventoux.  -Pete

New book: Tour de France: Le Ventoux, sommet de la folie

- Congrats to Steve Putnam for winning the Dauphine Libere poster by correctly picking Bert Grabsch to win Wednesday's TT.  Steve credits Phil Liggett for the pick; Liggett said that after a poor Stage 1 TT, Grabsch would ride strong.  I have more posters and other race items to give away soon.  -Pete

- Note: According to a usually reliable source, Dauphine Libere live coverage on Eurosport may start at 15:00 CET (9am U.S. Eastern) instead of at 16:10 CET as indicated on Eurosport's site.  That would seem to make sense given the earlier expected finish time.  We will monitor the situation at 15:00 CET.

Flashback: 2006 Dauphine Libere:  Philippe Gilbert and teammate Sebastien Joly started the day
as race leader and king of the mountains, respectively.  At the end of the stage,
Levi Leipheimer was in yellow and stage winner Denis Menchov was in the polka-dot jersey.

Flashback: 2006 Dauphine Libere:  Ronny Scholz (Gerolsteiner) was part of a 9-man breakaway
that escaped at the stage start.  At the base of Mont Ventoux, their lead was just under 3 minutes.
At the top, Scholz finished 20 minutes after stage winner Menchov.  But his work for the day had long
since ended, in support of his teammate, new race leader Leipheimer.
