Miguel Angel Lopez (Movistar) is on the attack in the finale of queen Stage 18 which he won on Alto del Gamoniteiro. Lopez after his victory: "It was a long time for me already since I wanted to win again in La Vuelta. It's been four years since my last success here, and achieving it on the Queen stage makes me so happy. I do this with so much commitment, ambition, and love for my wife and my son. I'm so thankful to my team-mates for their work. We're only five now in the race, and we're missing Carlos, Alejandro and Jacobs so much. However, everyone still here puts a lot of work to make up for the losses. It's been so beautiful to pay the team-mates back for this. The efforts from Imanol, Nelson, Rojillas, Enric… they were magnificent."

Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) wins Stage 17 and takes back the race lead. Roglic following Stage 17: "I really enjoyed this stage. It was a perfect day for me and for the team. Maybe this is my best stage in the Vuelta so far. Of course it’s a risk to attack at that moment, but I just wanted to follow Egan. We worked well together. On the final climb I went full throttle, also because of the great support from all the supporters alongside the road. Tomorrow we have to be there again. I’m in a good position in the general classification now, but the lead is never big enough. We have to stay sharp and keep riding as a team. I have every confidence in that."

Fabio "Incredible Hulk" Jakobsen (Deceuninck-Quickstep) wins Stage 16. Jakobsen following his victory: "This victory belongs to my teammates. They brought me back when I was dropped, kept me at the front, worked hard to reel in the breakaway and made sure I was where I needed to be for the final part of the stage, which featured several tricky parts. I am happy I could gift them the victory on this beautiful day. This time last year, I had no idea if I was going to be a bike rider again. I am extremely grateful to be here, able to fight for victory. I love the adrenaline this sport gives you, I love winning, and I love being part of the peloton and of this great team. To get my third stage here on my birthday, with the green jersey on my shoulders, it’s a dream. I’m over the moon, I really couldn’t be happier."

Rafal Majka wins Stage 15. Majka following his stage victory: "To go in the break, the important thing is to have good legs but, sometimes, these are not always enough to stay away. Today I tried from the start to attack, with the fixed idea of winning the stage in mind, in order to dedicate the success to my father, my two children and UAE Team Emirates, a really great team. I am very happy, it is nice to be able to celebrate after a bad start to the season, and to be able to dedicate it to my dad who passed away just 3 months ago."

Florian Senechal (Deceuninck-Quickstep), left, wins Stage 13. Senechal after his stage victory: "We had other plans today, but when Fabio shouted on the radio that I should go instead for the sprint, I immediately focused on that, on remaining calm and giving it my best in that chaotic finale. The guys did an incredible job and I’m grateful to them for their immense efforts and for giving me this opportunity. I feel honoured by their confidence and I’m delighted I could repay it today. At the same time, I also want to thank my wife, family and friends, people who, together with my team, always supported me and believed in me. I still don’t realise what this win means, it’s just crazy."

Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) sprints to victory in Stage 11. Roglic following his victory: "It was a tough day. Short, but very hot. Fortunately, I had enough energy left at the end to win today. It’s always nice to win a stage. Today’s finish suited me and it was an enjoyable challenge. The team did a fantastic job. They kept the speed up so the leading group was kept in sight, for which I want to thank them. We will evaluate the general classification day by day. The decisive stages are still to come. It is still a long way and the best will win."

Michael Storer (Team DSM) wins Stage 10. Storer after his stage victory: "It’s truly more unbelievable than the last time. There was a massive fight for the breakaway. It was one of those epic days where it took 80 kilometres before it went and I was happy to get in there with the guys. I was feeling good on the last climb. We knew exactly what we needed to do today to win – to go on the attack. I looked to see how the rest of the guys in the group were doing and felt the moment, and just went for it and hoped for the best. We knew it was tight on the descent and that I had to go fast down there. I was happy with my descent and in the end it was just enough to hold on. I dreamt of one stage win at this Vuelta and now to have two after ten days of racing; it’s unbelievable. The guys did a perfect job to set me up for this today. We didn’t put a foot wrong. This is for all of us."

Damiano Caruso (Bahrain Victorious) wins Stage 9. Caruso following his victory: "I’m so happy. I know it was a lot, but I knew Ineos was doing a really hard tempo. So I said okay, before they catch me I’ll try do a breakaway, maybe alone. I didn’t expect the gap to be bigger, but km by km it did…I still can’t believe what I’ve done. It’s an amazing feeling and a repeat after my feeling in the Giro. For me it’s incredible. The last climb was so long, and I just wanted to keep focussed on my tempo and in the last 2km I realised I could win the day."

Fabio Jakobsen (Deceuninck-Quickstep) wins Stage 8. Jakobsen after his stage victory: "To double up here means a lot to me. Two years ago, I took two stages at my Vuelta debut, so to repeat that feat now is just amazing! We had some hectic final 40 kilometers, with the GC teams really nervous as they jostled for position, but I had a fantastic team around me all the time and they did a great job to keep me at the front. In the closing kilometer I lost my teammates a bit, but I remained calm and confident in my legs and the speed I could generate. Florian did a great job, and just as we came out of the last corner I burst clear and finished it off. I’m excited and grateful to be here, a double stage winner after the opening week. I am also delighted to have green again, it’s the jersey every sprinter dreams about, and at the same time, a nice reward after suffering in the heat and on the climbs during Friday’s stage."

Michael Storer (Team DSM) wins Stage 7. Storer after his stage victory: "I didn’t expect to be a stage winner of the Vuelta today. I knew I was in good form and I knew that I just had to have a go but I’m really happy and surprised that I managed to do it today on a really really difficult stage. I didn’t enjoy that last kilometre but now I’m starting to realise I made it and can really enjoy this victory. The plan today was to be aggressive and to own the race. To be honest we really dominated the stage today and I’m so impressed with the guys. I don’t think we put one step wrong today, it was a really incredible effort. We knew coming into today that we were really well prepared and that’s really motivating. As a team we can look for more chances in this race – we don’t rest on our laurels at Team DSM and we’ll keep trying everyday."

Kenny Elissonde (Trek-Segafredo) is new leader following Stage 5. Elissonde post-stage: "It’s still incredible to wear this jersey as leader of a Grand Tour. After the Tour and the Olympics, I took it easy, and the team asked me if I could go to the Vuelta and just take it day by day. And look! That’s cycling. It’s incredible. If you would have told me this morning that I would take over the red jersey on an echelon stage, I would not believe it to be honest. But as I told you, I feel sorry for Rein to lose it in a crash. You never want this in cycling, it is the one thing that can happen. With the wind and with echelons it’s really nervous. In the back of my mind this morning I had that it might be a good idea to try and stay in the front as much as possible – not for a crash but in case of a split – and this is why I was in the front fo the rash. I did not know there was a crash until I heard in the radio that our GC leader Giulio Ciccone, was not in the first group, and I looked behind and saw the group was really small."

Sergio Higuita (EF Education First), part of the day's early breakaway, wins Stage 18. Said Higuita after his stage win: "It’s a dream to be at the Vuelta, riding a Grand Tour. And now, winning a stage, it’s very important. It’s the biggest win of my sporting career. I had to maintain a high rhythm because the big favorites were fighting behind me. My director told me I could keep an advantage over them. I had to ride with my heart until the last five kilometers, to handle the pain because this team needed this victory in this moment."

Philippe Gilbert (Deceuninck-Quickstep), part of a very large group that broke ahead due to crosswinds, wins Stage 17. It was Gilbert's second stage victory of the 2019 Vuelta a Espana. Said Gilbert post-stage: "The stage was complicated and very aggressive right from the start with the wind and everything, but we were very motivated and had a plan, so we hit the front early and did our thing. It was just crazy out there and I can tell you I have never experienced anything like this in 17 seasons as a pro. I am sure this stage will forever remain in the history of La Vuelta and people will talk about it for many years from now on. All this makes my win, which was possible only with the help of a fantastic and committed Wolfpack, even more sweet and unforgettable."

Part of an earlier breakaway, Sepp Kuss (Team Jumbo-Visma) greets spectators at the finish as he wins Stage 15. Kuss following his victory: "This is amazing to believe. The Vuelta is incredible for us at the moment. This is an incredible day. We were attentive from the beginning and at the front. Some of the the teams sent dangerous guys up to the front, so I decided to go with them. The gap was big enough to go for the stage win. Otherwise I was going to help Primoz on the final climb. I had no strategy on the final climb, I just went full gas, I celebrated the final kilometre with the fans. The passion they have is fantastic and that is why cycling is such a big sport. On bad days they are there for you, they shout you to the top. They always support, that is why I love cycling."

I want to say a huge thank you to the guys for working so hard for me. They controlled the race all day and made sure the break didn't make it to the line again on this race. Pogacar following his victory: "At the start I didn’t know I would feel so good on the last climb. In fact, I just wanted to survive because after stage 7, my goal was simply to not lose too much time. But in the end it was an incredible day for me. When I heard over the radio that nobody was following me and Roglic, I realised that it was a good opportunity to go for the stage. And with Roglic it’s always difficult to go against him because he’s really strong. I could do that today and I’m really, really happy."

Philippe Gilbert (Deceuninck-Quickstep) raises his arms on the podium following his Stage 12 victory. Post-stage, Gilbert had this to say: "There was a lot of headwind in the first part of the stage, but that didn’t stop us, and we attacked and joined many moves, but the bunch reacted each time. It was pretty chaotic, but we kept attacking and at one point, I went full gas on a descent. Tim came across, some other guys joined us, and together we opened a small gap which we kept increasing. Tim was so important, he did a brilliant job, especially before the last ascent, where he closed the gap on the two leaders, and I’m grateful to him for his help. From there, all I had to do was race smart and stick to my plan, which I did and now I’m satisfied it all paid off."

New race leader Primoz Roglic (Team Jumbo-Visma) on the podium following his Stage 10 victory - He had this to say after the stage: "I tried to go as fast as possible. It was enough for the win today. For me it was important to stay focused and pedal as hard as possible. That is all I had in my control today. We are still at the start of the Vuelta and we will see in Madrid whether this lead is enough to win the race. We have had some rough days already, but there are also difficult stages to come. Now it is important to stay healthy and then we will look at it day by day. I will have to handle the race together with the team, but we have a strong team."

Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) wins Stage 9. Pogacar had this to say following his victory: "It has been an incredible stage; it was very demanding from the start. Yesterday, when I saw the weather forecast for today, and I read that it would be rainy, I was actually happy because I knew I had it in me to do something special. I gave it everything on the gravel sector, and even after that effort I felt strong right up until the finish line. I know that I beat some of the best riders, but today’s stage wasn’t very straightforward. We had to contend with gravel and also a hailstorm, so it’s understandable that some riders would have had difficulties."

Part of the breakaway, Nikias Arndt (Team Sunweb) wins Stage 8. Nikias Arndt following his victory: "It’s amazing. Yesterday I said I wanted to go in the breakaway today but to be there and to take the win is unbelievable; I’m super happy. Martijn helped me really well and the team worked great together. I think we played it very smart, with Martijn in the break who could attack while I sat back and waited for the sprint. It was good that he was up front in the closing kilometres so I could save some energy. In the finale I was just following all of the attacks and stayed in the game. I felt really good and I knew I was fast enough to win the sprint from the break, so I had to keep it together. It’s definitely one of my best days in my career so far."

This season has already been good to me, always up there within the best, but taking a stage like this one in La Vuelta, with such a strong competition - it really makes me happy. I want to thank all of my team-mates for the huge gamble they made on us for the win, and Nairo in particular, because he rode brilliantly over the last climb. He tried to distance Roglic and López with his attacks, but seeing they were able to match him, he set a steady pace so I could go for the victory later on. I was confident, I knew I was doing well, and the worst result I could have got was fourth (laughs)."
