- Photos: Stage 1 on Facebook

- When ITV asked me to contribute a TDF prediction, I noted that Andy Schleck had a team advantage over Alberto Contador in two areas in the first half of the race: in today's Team Time Trial and in staying out of trouble generally.  Contador found trouble in the very first stage of the race yesterday, caught behind a crash as most of his main rivals got away ahead of the mishap.  It cost him 1:14+ in the overall among top contenders.  These things can happen, of course, but the race can be lost well before the high mountains if one does not stay out of trouble.  Contador likely will lose a little more time today.  His hopes for overall victory won't be over but losing time in each of the first two stages isn't good for team morale.  Contador and Saxo Bank are vulnerable and we can expect teams such as Leopard Trek, BMC and RadioShack to try to take advantage of that wherever possible before the mountains.  The race is only beginning. -Pete
