Flashback: Chavanel on the Col de la Ramaz, 2003

2003 Dauphine Libere: "Baker boy" Sylvain Chavanel (Brioches la Boulangere) climbs the Col de la Ramaz.  It was 7 years ago and the climb was also featured in the Tour that year.  It is back today and could be where the fireworks commence, though perhaps not among the top favorites for the overall.  French riders and teams are out to prove something this year, with some dropped from the ProTour and looking for new sponsors.  (Bouygues is in talks with La Poste (the French post office) who may take over next year as title sponsor)  A more experienced Chavanel starts the day in yellow.  -Pete

Petacchi is back:  I took the photo above in the town of Montargis, site of today's TDF Stage 5 finish, at the finish of Stage 1 of the 2004 Paris-Nice.  It shows the official event poster featuring Alessandro Petacchi, then with Fassa Bortolo, winner of yesterday's Tour stage.  Why was Petacchi featured on the poster?  Well, he won a stage in the 2003 Paris-Nice.  Now a single stage win wouldn't ordinarily earn you such a prominent place in the next year's poster.  But Petacchi followed that Paris-Nice stage win with a whopping 6 stage wins in the 2003 Giro d'Italia and then 4 stage wins in the 2003 Tour de France.  And as if that wasn't enough, he won 5 stages in the 2003 Vuelta a Espana!  Petacchi was the dominant sprinter then, taking over for Mario Cipollini.  Now, in 2010, Petacchi with two stage wins thus far seems to have turned back the clock.  -Pete

2010 Tour de France:  With teammate Frank Schleck crashed out of the race, Fabian Cancellara (Saxo Bank) guides Andy Schleck over the cobbles in a dramatic Stage 3 that would be won by Thor Hushovd (Cervelo Test Team).  For his efforts, Cancellara found himself back in yellow.  World champion Cadel Evans, like Schleck, was also a winner, having gained time on Alberto Contador (Astana) and Lance Armstrong (RadioShack).

Today will see the second time Cambrai has been a stage town in the Tour de France.  In 2004, Cambrai was the start town for the 60km Team Time Trial won, in a miserable driving rain, by Lance Armstrong's USPS team.  The stage victory put Armstrong into the yellow jersey.  There is no Team Time Trial this year.

2010 Tour de France:  Sylvain Chavanel (Quick Step) raises an arm in triumph as he wins Stage 2 after initiating a breakaway just 17 kilometers from the start.  Chavanel also took over the race lead as the peloton neutralized the race following multiple crashes on the descent of the Côte de Stockeu.

- This stage over cobblestones is one of the most anticipated stages of this year's Tour and has been talked about ever since the route was unveiled in Paris last October.  The number of top classics riders in the race is impressive: Cancellara, O'Grady, Breschel, Flecha, Ballan, Hincapie, Burghardt to name a few.  But most of them are expected to ride in support of team leaders for the overall: the Schlecks, Wiggins, Evans.  The RadioShack team of Lance Armstrong will look to profit from this stage and some feel that of the top contenders, Armstrong is most likely to be able to use this stage to his advantage.  RadioShack directeur sportif Alain Gallopin is quoted in this morning's L'Equipe as saying that the team will evaluate the situation after the first difficult cobbled section, Sars-et-Rosieres, in France, at about 25km from the finish.  RadioShack of course would like to put some time into race favorite Alberto Contador, as would the other contenders.  We might expect to see some collaboration between teams like Saxo Bank, BMC and RadioShack toward that end assuming they have their team leaders in the mix.  Perhaps friends Hincapie and Armstrong and their respective teammates will gun it, like in 2004 where they knocked Iban Mayo out of contention.  The peloton will be more nervous than ever after yesterday's crashes and the fight for positioning at the front ahead of the tougher cobblestone sections will surely lead to crashes.  -Pete

RadioShack team manager Johan Bruyneel, left, speaks with A.S.O. competitions director Jean-François Pécheux before the final stage of this year's Paris-Nice in March.  Pécheux is responsible for drawing up the Tour route.  For today's Tour Stage over the cobblestones, Tour director Christian Prudhomme instructed Pécheux to design a stage that would "make a difference".  And today's stage should make a difference.  But as always it is the riders that make the race, or not.  -Pete

- Alexandre Vinokourov hints in this morning's L'Equipe that this could be a stage for personal glory.  He knows the area well and today is the anniversary of the birth of the city of Astana as well as the birthday of the president of the republic of Kazakhstan.  Not hard to imagine Vino attempting an escape today under these circumstances (also, see stage profile below) before settling later in the Tour into his supposed role as a model teammate in support of Alberto Contador...  And of course no one knows what may happen in tomorrow's stage over the cobblestones or, really, any stage of the TDF; in a flash, a support rider on any given team can find himself team leader in the Tour...  -Pete
