The 2009 Circuit Cycliste Sarthe - Pays de la Loire got underway this morning and runs through April 10.  Today's Stage 1 departed the island of Noirmoutier via the Passage du Gois.  Yes, THAT Passage du Gois, the same one used in Stage 2 of the 1999 Tour de France that saw a massive crash on its slippery surface that split the peloton, with a certain Lance Armstrong in a group up the road but his top lieutenant for the mountain stages, Jonathan Vaughters, on the ground and out of the race.

Vacationers at the Passage du Gois, which can only be crossed at low tide,
wait for the tide to recede.  The passage, 4.5km long, is naturally
flooded at high tide twice a day.

I can no longer think of the Circuit Sarthe without thinking of Saul Raisin's crash in Stage 1 of this race in 2006.  Saul had raced Milan-San Remo that year and seemed poised for a break-out season before the crash ended his pro dreams.  I'd otherwise think of Sarthe as a minor race...but from this perspective, there is no such thing as a minor bike race.  The race arrives each year in the city of Angers, where Saul's parents spent weeks waiting and worrying about the future of their son who was in hospital there.  The story is told in Saul's book, "Tour de Life".  -Pete

Riders on the start list this year include: Kloden, Pereiro, McCartney, Moos, Casper, Goubert, Vaugrenard, Kirchen, Lewis, Henderson, Barry, El Fares, Dumoulin, Voeckler, Bouyer.

- Race is underway with the first breakaway who, according to the translated ticker, just had their rent raised.  (switched to Babelfish translation for now as ticker wasn't updating under Google)

- As the Google-translated ticker says, the official site ticker will allow us to know which riders are running away and which ones have been dropped from the bike.  Should be a fun week for translations and hopefully great racing.  Alberto "The Accountant" Contador (Astana) is the big favorite.  His top rivals from last year, all of whom finished within one minute of the champion, are back:  Cadel Evans, Thomas Dekker, Damiano Cunego.  Throw in a couple of Schlecks, Sanchezes, a Kreuziger, and a strong Garmin-Slipstream team with Danielson, Vande Velde, Pate and Zabriskie leading the way, and the attacks are assured.  Pate has probably already attacked...and the race hasn't begun yet.  Oh, and a certain Tour champion, Carlos Sastre, is racing too.  Lots of mountains and then a final stage time trial where Danny Pate seals a stunning overall victory, the first ever by an American in the Vuelta al Pais Vasco.  Probably not, but anything can happen.  -Pete

- Thanks to Jafet for the Tour of the Basque Country live radio feed.

- A couple of you e-mailed overnight asking if we were sure about the CTV start time we posted yesterday, that perhaps our time was one hour early.  I suspect you are right.  Didn't notice the usual "+1" was missing on the CTV site.  Better an hour early than an hour late, but sorry for the mixup.  So CTV should get underway at 12:40 CET (6:40am U.S. Eastern)  Thanks for the correction.  -Pete
